Five Factor Test

This test determines if you qualify as a "minister for tax purposes" under IRS guidelines, based on Knight v. Commissioner (1989). Factor 1 is required; you must also answer YES to at least 2 of Factors 2-5.

Factor 1: Ordained, Commissioned, or Licensed (REQUIRED)

Are you ordained, commissioned, or licensed by a recognized church or religious organization?

Factor 1 must be answered YES to proceed.
Note: You must answer YES to at least 2 of the following 4 factors to qualify for Form 4361.

Factor 2: Administer Sacraments

Do you administer sacraments or ordinances such as baptisms, communions, or marriages?

Factor 3: Conduct Worship Services

Do you conduct or lead worship services, church services, or prayer meetings?

Factor 4: Management & Maintenance of Religious Organization

Do you perform services in the control, conduct, or maintenance of a religious organization (e.g., managerial or administrative duties under church authority)?

Factor 5: Considered a Spiritual Leader

Are you considered a spiritual leader by the church or denomination (e.g., counseling, prayer for the sick, teaching, spiritual guidance)?
